“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9 NKJV
We are famous for singing and testifying about trusting God. We can be demonstrative and jubilant in our declarations of faith through choruses such as “I Will Trust In the Lord Till I Die.” But here is the thing: “Do you trust God to the extent of allowing Him to answer your prayer His way?” Many of us make a request of God, hoping He will answer by our preconceived method, much like Naaman.
Naaman was an honorable general of the Syrian army according to 2 Kings 5. He had won victories in battle against other armies, but he had a battle that he was losing in his body. He was a leper. During one of his raids, he captured a girl from the land of Israel who became his wife’s servant. This young girl saw the condition of her master and knew he could be healed if he could have an audience with the prophet Elisha.
The king granted Naaman permission to meet with the man of God. He went to Samaria with high expectations. As a winning commander of an army, Naaman was looking forward to meeting the man of God and being healed in a dignified way. He pulled up to the palace in his horse-driven chariot and expensive gifts to present to Elisha but was surprised to learn that no one in authority would greet him. A servant greeted him with instructions from the prophet, “…go dip seven times in the Jordan River.” Naaman was insulted and almost missed his blessing. Why wouldn’t the prophet come out to greet him, the mighty man of valor? Naaman was further humiliated when he was given instructions to dip his noble body in a dirty river, the Jordan. Naaman suggested other bodies of water that would be cleaner and more suitable for a person of his stature. He was furious and was leaving without his healing when it was suggested to him that maybe he should follow the instructions. When Naaman did as the prophet instructed, he was healed beyond his imagination. Not only was he healed of leprosy, but his skin returned to its baby-like state.
My friend, are you waiting on God to answer your prayer, perhaps healing your body? Do you have predetermined ideas of how God will do it? Are you saying, “Lord I trust You to heal me, but this is how I want to be healed?” If you are waiting on God to answer your prayer your way, you might miss out if you have closed your mind to any possibilities, but how you want it to be accomplished. God is our Healer, and He has promised to heal us, but He chooses how, when, and where He will perform it. Let’s look beyond our finite conceptions and open our minds to the possibility that maybe God has a unique way that He will heal us or answer our request. Listen for His voice. Could He be speaking through the voice of a preacher, a doctor, or a little girl from a strange land? Don’t abort your healing or answer to prayer because you want things done your way, Naaman!
Pray…
Lord, forgive me for not trusting You fully. Answer my prayer from Your well of wisdom. I will be satisfied however You decide best for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
