“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.”
Matthew 5:8
We are living in perilous times as Paul forewarned in 2 Timothy 3:1. Perilous times are times that are dangerous, risky, and hard to bear. During these times, hearts are deceived, even the hearts of those in the household of faith. Why? Because their hearts are not pure toward God.
Deceiving means to lead astray, wander off the path, cause mistakes, stray from the truth, and cause someone to hold a wrong view. According to 2 Timothy 3:13, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.”
God forewarned us through the Scriptures that times of deception would come; therefore, He admonished us to “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” (James 4:8)
Deception can only operate or achieve its desired results through a defiled heart. A defiled heart is a corrupted heart, or a heart bent on having its way. God commands us to be filled with the Sprit of God because it’s God’s Spirit that leads us into the truth. First John 4:6 states, “We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”
When we have a heart that’s undefiled, pure toward God, we aren’t easily deceived. We aren’t easily carried away by desires of the flesh or things that aren’t conceived in the heart of God. Because our hearts are pure, Satan, the evil one, cannot creep in and plant seeds of doubt and corruption in our minds. James 1:8 explains that a double-minded man (person) will not receive anything from God.
When Jesus sat and taught on the Mount of Beatitudes, He expounded on the characteristics of God. The sixth characteristic states, “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). Jesus was saying, happy, or joyful in your circumstances is the person who has an undefiled heart.
“See” in this context doesn’t mean observing with the physical eye but experiencing an event.
The person who has a pure heart toward God shall see God; that is, they will experience the essence of God. This person will get to know the ways of God. They will know the mind of God. And they will love the things God loves and hate the things He hates.
Beloved, God is concerned with our hearts because life’s issues flow out of it (Proverbs 4:23). He admonishes us to guard our hearts, be careful about what we let into it. If our hearts become corrupt, we are easily deceived and carried away with erroneous thinking. God will test us to see if our hearts are pure. Listen to what He told the children of Israel, “And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not” (Deuteronomy 8:2).
Like the children of Israel, God will lead us in a way to expose our hearts. I believe that’s what He is doing today, revealing the hearts of those who claim to be His. The questions we need to ask ourselves, is my heart pure toward God? Are we, as the body of Christ, exhibiting godly characteristics of peace, love, meekness, mercy, and kindness? Or, are we the source of confusion and disparity in the world?
Pray this prayer…
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-34.
