In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
There are times when God shows His hand of protection so vividly, that we have to stop and give Him thanks. This happened to me recently when a dear friend of mine told me about a burglary that took place in her home. She was home when the burglar decided to case her house. But, thanks be to God, she was able to get out of the house without being noticed. It’s times like these that I have to do nothing but thank My Lord and Savior for Who He is, and how He protects us from the onslaughts of the enemy.
Yes, I bless and thank God on a regular basis, but when you see so clearly His hand upon your life and the lives of your loved ones, it makes you even more grateful to serve a God Who is faithful. As a matter of fact, God commands that we live a life of gratitude. A grateful heart is one of the characteristic of a true worshipper.
Here are a few admonitions from Scripture:
“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name” (Psalm 100:4).
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful” (Colossians 3:15).
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Colossians 4:2).
“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe…” (Hebrews 12:28).
We see a beautiful expression of a grateful heart in Luke 17:11-19, when Jesus cleansed 10 lepers. Leprosy was a terrible infectious skin disease that caused one to be quarantined from their community. Although Jesus cleansed 10, only 1 came back to show his gratitude by thanking Jesus and bowing down to worship Him.
This man was the least in the group, so to speak, because he was a Samaritan. Jewish people and Samaritans did not co-mingle. Jesus was so moved by the Samaritan’s expression of gratitude that He took this man’s blessings a step further and made him whole. So not only did the man receive healing for his physical body, but everything he lost was restored to him. The other 9 only got the healing.
My friend, Jesus takes special note when we express our appreciation for the things that He does for us. Let’s live a life of gratitude.
Pray this prayer with me:
Lord, I thank You for my life, health and strength. I thank You for a sound mind, body and spirit. Thank You for your protection from danger seen and unseen. Lord, I thank You for staying the hand of the enemy from all of his attacks, plots, plans and schemes. Thank You for hiding me and my loved ones under the shadow of Your wings and for the angels who are guarding us in all of our ways. Lord, I thank You for Your love, for being my provider and my keeper. Thank You for ordering my footsteps and giving me wisdom and strategies for my life.
Lord, I thank You for friends, family, associates and wholesome relationships. I thank You that I am free to worship and serve You. I thank You for keeping a bloodline drawn around my children and giving them a heart to serve You. Lord, I thank You for helping me to bridle my tongue and to endure with patience the test that is set before me. I thank You for giving me the authority to pray in Your name and to bind or loose things that are on the earth, above the earth and beneath the earth. I thank You that I am the head and not the tail, above and never beneath.
Thank You, Lord, for receiving this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Thank you so much for the reminder to repeatedly give thanks–and to expand the inclusivity of my prayers. This message let me know that on far too many days my prayers are ‘skimpy’–while my Blessings are daily abundant!
