“What can I do to help you?” Elisha asked. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?”
2 Kings 4:2
Many times, we search for something that we already have in our possession. We overlook it or miss it, because we have our own concept of how it should appear. If it isn’t spectacular or impressive, we dismiss it as not being the thing that we are anticipating. Oftentimes, our ideas and thoughts are biased, due to our tradition, training or taste. The thing that we need, usually, is already within us or within our reach. Such was the case with the widow woman that cried to Elisha about being helplessly in debt.
This poor widow woman, as she has been described, was the wife of a late prophet, who served and loved the Lord. She thought her husband had left her destitute, when she only needed to have her eyes and senses sharpened to see that he left her with the power to get wealth. It was the prophet, Elisha, that her husband served, who came into her midst and pointed out that she had more than enough to pay off her debt and enough to sustain her household for the rest of her life.
This widow woman, looked at her jar of olive oil as being worthless compared to her debt situation, not knowing its value. Many of us have in our midst something so small that it seems insignificant, not knowing that it’s the answer to our dilemma. Many times, God appears or begins with something small so that He can demonstrate to us, His power to increase and magnify anything. In the process, our faith, discernment and ability to trust Him are strengthened.
God is a Master of taking that which appears small or insignificant and maximizing it. Such was the case with the small cloud like a man’s hand that Elijah’s servant saw on top of Mt. Carmel. From that small cloud, God sent a deluge on the land of Israel, after the land had been thirsting for water from a three-and-a-half-year drought. (See 1 Kings 18:44-45.)
Also, remember how the prophet Elijah was expecting God to appear to him in a sensational manner when he was on the mountain? God did not appear to him in the earthquake, wind or fire. He appeared to him in a still small voice. (See 1 Kings 19:11-12.)
We can glean a lot from the aforementioned biblical events.
From the widow woman:
If you don’t use the little you have, there will never be a flow. Once, you prime the pump with the little you do have, God will cause your flow of “oil” to exceed your expectations.
From Elijah:
Expect God to turn your little into a downpour—a rain storm that will irrigate the hard, dry, desert-like places in your life.
Furthermore, keep your ears opened and your senses sharpened, because God very seldom reveals Himself in a dramatic way or in the midst of pandemonium.
Here’s a bonus:
If you wait for all conditions to be right, you will never get started, according to, Ecclesiastes 11:4.
Pray…
Lord, help me to recognize that the little I have is all You need to begin a flow in my life. I have been informed, now it’s up to me to prime the pump. Lord, also help me to sense Your voice in the small whispers that I hear daily. Amen.

Awesome post!
Thanks!
Yes, God has already provided much more than we realize. Our eyes just have to be opened to see how we can use what He has given us. One person who read the post told me that it made her think of things in her house that she could sell to be bringing in income.
Thanks, Jackie!
This post gives you a lot to think about, especially, when you place so much emphasis on your possessions and not how God would have you to use what He has given you.
