“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV
Mental health has finally moved from the shadows to center stage. Until recently, it was taboo to mention our negative mental state in a public forum. Many people were too embarrassed to discuss their mental well-being for fear of being ostracized; therefore, they suffered in silence.
According to experts, people who have experienced trauma have suffered mental illness to some degree. Trauma can be defined as “a deeply distressing or disturbing experience: emotional shock following a stressful event or a physical injury, which may be associated with physical shock and sometimes leads to long-term neurosis.” Based on this definition, most of us have experienced a measure of trauma from the worldwide pandemic that touched our lives in unprecedented ways since the Spring of 2020.
Mental disturbances are nothing new. Men and women, boys and girls, have experienced depression, anxiety, confusion, and suicidal thoughts throughout the ages. Thanks to greats like tennis player Naomi Osaka and gymnastic Simone Biles, others have been encouraged to seek the help they need for their mental health.
The Bible is not silent on this subject. God sent His Son to die for our total well-being, including our spiritual, mental, and emotional health. Paul stated in Philippians 4:6 (AMP), “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].”
When we are disturbed mentally and emotionally, we don’t have peace in our souls.
Paul also prayed that we would be made completely whole through Christ Jesus, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:22 NKJV)
The Bible certainly holds the answer to all of our needs. Still, sometimes we need trained professionals to guide us through the principles outlined in the Bible, such as a therapist or psychologist.
Pray,
Lord, give us the guidance and strength we need to become every wit whole. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
