“The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and to Amram she bore Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.” Numbers 26:59
For several decades we have celebrated the contribution of women in the USA during March.
Since Eve, the “Mother of All Living, “women have played a significant role in society, culture, and history. Some biblical women are obscure, but they left indelible historical imprints on our world; however, they remain unrecognized for their involvement in shaping the world. One such woman is Jochebed, the mother of Moses. Very few Bible readers know her by name or have considered her at all, yet she is an influencer, not just during her day, thousands of years ago, but in our modern society.
Jochebed was a woman trusted with a powerful assignment. God chose her to carry, give birth to, and nurture the great deliverer, Moses. While pregnant with her son, Jochebed had to be discerning and discreet because he was subject to death the moment he was born. Pharaoh, the King of that day, made a decree to have all Israelite baby boys killed, for he feared the enslaved people would gain control over the Egyptians if they increased in manpower.
Jochebed was of the house and lineage of Levi, which means she had a special attachment to God. Levi means “attached.” Jochebed used her special connection with God to save her son.
From Jochebed’s situation and victory, we infer that she was a prayer warrior. A prayer warrior wars in the spirit, launches attacks, take authority in the spirit realm, binds principalities, pulls down strongholds, and thwarts the enemy’s plans. Jochebed’s prayers were so effective they penetrated the second and third heavens, thus blinding the mind and eyes of the enemy and receiving from God strategy to save her son.
Because Jochebed was in an intense predicament, I’m sure she prayed like a desperate woman day in and day out. She is an excellent example for mothers today. Our children are in trouble and are in danger of losing their lives at a young age. They are vulnerable to the attacks and skims of the enemy. The enemy knows that when they come to the knowledge of their Savior, Jesus Christ, they will terrorize his kingdom.
Moses grew up in the enemies’ house with the best Egypt offered. He learned their ways but wasn’t tainted by them (Hebrews 11:24). As a grown man, he still had a heart for his people. Jochebed infused hope, faith, and strength in Moses while praying for him in the womb and breastfeeding him as a young child. God will do the same for our children if we do as Jochebed did; intercede and pray heartedly for our children. God will spare their lives and cause the enemy to pay for their education so they can fulfill their calling.
God entrusted Jochebed, a woman whose name only appears twice in the Bible, with a delicate task because she was fearless, full of courage, faith, hope, determination, and obedience. Mothers and people of God must possess these same characteristics if we want our children to fulfill their destiny. God did it for Moses, and he will do it for them. Let’s not allow our busy schedules to keep us out of the prayer closet, thus aborting our children’s future. Are you up to the challenge? Then pray this prayer.
Lord, forgive me for not praying for my children the way Jochebed prayed for Moses. Please give me a spirit of prayer and the boldness to cry out to You for directions for my children, nieces, and nephews. Thank You for hearing my cry and for protecting my children. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
