“Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).
Surrender is a word that we love to hate. Yet, it’s the most important word that we can demonstrate. Some would say love is the most important word, but before we can express love, we have to surrender our hearts to the object of our affection. Surrender even appears in the dictionary before thanks, thankful and thanksgiving. Before expressing thanksgiving, we must surrender our attitudes and hearts to the recipient of our gratitude.
Surrender means to submit, abandon oneself, to give in, and to cease resistance.
Jesus is our perfect model of surrender. On many occasions and many levels, He modeled submission to authorities and subordinates. Even though Jesus is God and equal to His Father in power, He surrendered His will to His Father. The night before His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, while agonizing in prayer, He asked His Father, “If it is Your will, take this cup away from Me…” Jesus’ response to His request was, “Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” That’s surrender to the highest level, my friend. During a time of His greatest distress and agony, Jesus was willing to surrender to His Father’s desires.
Surrender from the heart is difficult for most of us to think about more or less act upon, but it’s required of servants. The servant is no greater than His Lord. The level of surrender that God requires cannot be accomplished in the flesh; it takes the strength that only comes through the grace of God.
Instead of kicking against the pricks, beloved, embrace the grace for the situation that requires your surrender and watch God give you supernatural victorious overcoming power.
Now let’s reiterate the meaning of surrender; to abandon ones’ will for the common good and wishes of another, to bring oneself low, to get off the throne, and kneel at the feet of another.
To resist surrender is an indication of pride which God hates.
“…Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10
Pray…
Lord, surrender does not come easy for me. And to put it just the way I think about it, I dislike it. However, I am willing to do like Jesus and submit to Your will because You require it of me. With your abundant grace, I can do it!
Thank You, Jesus.”
