“Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2 NASB
Born again, believers are diligent about keeping their spirits healthy. We put effort into living a morally pure life. But we tend to neglect our physical bodies, which are as crucial as our spiritual being.
Preachers and teachers of the gospel tend to focus their messages on spirit and soul issues, making it seem like meddling when giving guidance on taking care of the physical body. God spoke these words to me, “Maintaining Good Health is Spiritual Warfare.”
One of the ways we defeat the enemy of our soul is to keep our bodies healthy. What can the enemy do with a healthy body? We open the door for the enemy to wreak havoc in our lives when we fail to maintain good health. Illnesses and diseases will find fertile ground to flourish when the body has been neglected and is malnourished.
You don’t have to spend a day in medical school or sit for one hour in a seminary to know you can’t abuse your body and stay in good health.
The Apostle John heard that his friend Gaius was doing well spiritually; he was steadfast in the faith, teaching truth and living a godly life. However, he received a report that his physical health was failing. This report concerned the Apostle. He wrote the little letter of Third John to Gaius and told him that his desire was for his physical health to be as prosperous as his spirit and soul.
Why so? God needs a healthy body to work through. How can we complete our assignments and be a witness for God if we are in poor health? Moreover, Scripture reminds us that our bodies are not our own. “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NKJV)
What are we presenting to God? Let’s not wait until we get sick or have symptoms before we focus on body health. Hosea 4:6, states “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” In this technology age, there is no excuse for not acquiring basic knowledge. Information is at our fingertips.
Lack of knowledge is one reason we neglect our bodies, but also moving away from God’s natural laws is another. To maintain a healthy body, we should: eat natural foods (foods that are close to the way nature made them), drink plenty of pure water, get adequate sunshine and pure air, get sufficient rest, exercise, and think positive thoughts.
We can obtain good health by avoiding negativity according to Proverbs 17:22, “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”
God’s desire is for us to live a long, healthy, happy, and satisfying life. It ups to us to take care of ourselves. Jesus said in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

John 13:17 admonishes us— “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”
Are you taking care of YOU?
Pray…
Lord, help me be as mindful of my physical body as I am of my spiritual well-being. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
