“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord” (Luke 1:45 NKJV).
In 1978, March was designated as Women’s History Month in the United States. During March, women are acknowledged for their accomplishments and their contributions to society. They have studied and achieved in all areas of life, but the most remarkable undertaking is motherhood.
Women are life-givers. From the moment a woman realizes she is carrying a fetus in her womb, she begins to nourish her child and make plans for the new arrival. Her heart expands to a degree of love she never thought possible. The expectant mother’s imagination goes into overdrive, and she wonders what the sex of the child is and who the child will grow up to be.
In my opinion, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the portrait of a model mother. She was no different than most mothers in many ways; however, she knew she would deliver a baby boy and that He was destined to die so billions could live. As a mother, I would guess that being privy to this information didn’t alleviate Mary’s grief while watching her Son fulfill His purpose on the Via Dolorosa. Pain like no other must have ripped through her heart with each flog of the whip, each insulting accusation, and each drop of blood that dripped from His grotesque body.
Mary knew this day of agony would come, yet she sacrificed her womb so the world might have Light, Love, and Life. Mary’s obedience illuminates the heart of a mother. Through her, we can see how women are built. They are made to carry heavy loads, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Mary had a heart of love, not only for her Child but also for her Savior. Mothers love their children beyond understanding. They will continue to love their children after others have given up and walked away.
Mary had a giving heart—she gave her womb, her reputation, and her Son. Mothers give their last to their children; their last dollar or morsel of bread.
Mary had a forgiving heart—she forgave those who crucified her Son. Mothers don’t hold grudges against their children. She excuses their imperfect behavior.
Mary had a sacrificial heart—She sacrificed an everyday life for the spotlight. Mothers will do without necessities to ensure that their children have what is needed.
Mary had a heart of Joy. She rejoiced in song because a Savior was coming into the world, and the world would never be the same. Mothers rejoice when they bring life into the world.
Like Mary many centuries ago, women give their all for causes they champion. After providing for their households, they reach out and enrich their communities and the world with their gifts and talents. What a lackluster place this world would be without the Mary’s (women) of the world!
If you are a woman, give God praise for making you a wonderful, loving, giving, sacrificial, and joyful being. If you were born of a woman, give God the glory for sending you to earth through her womb.
Declare…
Thank You, Lord, for blessing me to be born of a woman!
