“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” John 7:37
Most invitations state a specific date and time to participate in an event. Events held in a public space such as a hotel or conference center has an arrival and departure time. It doesn’t matter how enjoyable the occasion, once the time has expired, everyone must say their goodbyes and exit the venue. Sometimes, when hosts hold events in their private homes, they will extend an invitation for guests to linger as long as they desire with reasonable constraints.
Jesus, on the other hand, is known for opened ended invitations. There are no time restrictions and no entrance fees; believing in Him is the only ticket one needs to participate. For instance, when the returning exiles came back to Jerusalem, Yahweh, the Living Lord, extended an invitation to put away the Babylonians’ ways and partake of the abundant life that God had to offer. “Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” Isaiah 55:1
When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well in Sychar, He realized that she was dehydrated, dry, and thirsty spiritually. She had been trying to satisfy her thirst through human relationships. Jesus knew what she needed, and the price to receive it was beyond her ability to pay, so Jesus offered Himself, the Living Water, as a gift. He said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:10, 13-14 NKJV
During the last day of the feast of Tabernacles, “…Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37-38 NKJV
Many of us are like the woman Jesus encountered at the well; we are dry and drained due to the world’s happenings. The adverse conditions have pulled on us mentally, emotionally, financially, socially, and spiritually. Like the woman at the well, many seek answers in places that can never satisfy their longings. The invitation Jesus extended this woman still stands today. And, He will supply this Living Water freely to anyone who asks.
The Living Water that Jesus gives refreshes, revives, reinvigorates, restores, and renews. It’s the Water that strengthens and helps us see from a new perspective. This river of Living Water perks us up, nourishes our souls, and gives us the determination to stay the course. The affairs of this world will only take us down if we allow it.
For the children of God, adversity comes to make us strong, to purify our character, and make us fit for the Master’s use. If you are dry and drained, drink from the Living Water, the source of our strength. It will keep your spiritual muscles strong and your attitude healthy. The good news is, It’s free and has no expiration date.
Lord, thank You for the Living Water that you give without price! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
