“Blessed be the Lord my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight…” Psalm 144:1
Some people have the temperament of a fighter. They don’t mind fighting, and they will provoke conditions to incite conflict. People with a warring temperament aren’t happy or fulfilled until they engage in warfare. At the same time, others shy away from a confrontation at all costs.
Fighting or warring is not always a bad thing. All of us are warriors. Why do I say this? We are made in God’s image, and God is a Warrior; One who has never lost a battle or war. Exodus 15:3 declares, “The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name.”
God not only put war in us, but He expects us to fight. He knows that we have an enemy determined to kill, steal, and destroy us and our destiny. God teaches our hands to war and our fingers to fight. And He has also even given us combat uniforms.
- “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:11-12.
And weapons of war.
- “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds…” 2 Corinthians 10:4.
When we fight, we are not beating the air, but fighting with a purpose. Women, in particular, are built for war. God put enmity between her and the devil. Enmity is deep-seated hatred. If you want to see a mother bear in her rarest form, mess with her cubs. The fierceness in Jochebed, Moses’ mother, surfaced when Pharaoh gave an edict to kill all baby boys two years and younger. She didn’t know the Scriptures quoted above, but she knew how to fight for her baby boy, who had purpose and destiny.
Jochebed used prayer as her first line of offense and the shield of faith to build her courage. She placed her baby Moses in an ark and trusted God to protect and direct him.
Jochebed knew her purpose was to give birth to a great leader and to nurture him to manhood. She didn’t know how God would orchestrate it, but she wasn’t going to roll over and allow her son to be annihilated. God gave Jochebed this assignment because He could trust her to follow His lead.
God has given all of us purpose and destiny. We cannot allow the threat of danger to hinder us from fulfilling our purpose. We have to do like Jochebed and contend for it. Suit up in your armor every day and fight! No, it isn’t easy. Every assignment that God gives us is beyond our human ability to achieve. He has given us the weapons, and He expects us to do like Nehemiah told his people,
“Then as I looked over the situation, I called together the nobles and the rest of the people and said to them, “Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!”
Someone is about to throw in the towel on their destiny; God is saying, FIGHT! Don’t give up on that assignment! Don’t give up on that child! Don’t give up on that business! Don’t give up on that book! FIGHT! I am with you.
It can be easy to give up when we become discouraged and feel like we are alone. It’s a test of our resilience. Hang in there, God is teaching your hands to war and your fingers to fight. You have more hurdles to face. This situation will give you the strength to climb the next mountain. God has put in you everything you need to succeed! He expects us to be courageous warriors and do as Paul declares, “Fight the good fight for the true faith.” 1 Timothy 6:12
Declare…
I am a warrior. I will not give up on my assignment, no matter how hard it seems. I will trust God and follow His lead. I am a fighter! I am a winner! I will not give up on my destiny!
