“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 KJV
How often have you heard parents or teachers of young children say, “Can’t you be still, or Can’t you be quiet?” I can hear God saying something similar to His children. “Can’t you be still, relax, and trust Me?”
I hear your mind churning like Gomer Pyle’s, Go-o-o-o-lie, haven’t I being still long enough?
This is the thing, we see and understand from a human perspective, while God sees with eternal eyes and infinite wisdom. When He makes a request, such as, “Be still,” He has His plan for the ages in view. Our finite minds may never understand the need to be still.
For months, we restricted our activities due to the pandemic. We are learning that our ripping and running from one urgency to another wasn’t as critical as we thought—maybe we were driven by self-importance. What about our minds and our mouths, are they still in overdrive? Or, have we allowed “stillness” to be our peace and comfort? Selah! No pun intended.
In the midst of the present crisis, busy still seems to be the buzz word. “I’m busier now than before the quarantine,” has slipped from the mouths of many, lately. Really? God is trying to get us to loosen the reins, let go of the busyness, be silent, tarry, and rest in Him.
Yet, we hear the outcries from those who lost their jobs and suffer lack. Others are longing to see their loved ones; or crave for recreation and a sense of normalcy. How can the command to “Be Still” be reconciled with these needs and desires?
Psalm 46 was written to be a song of confidence in our sovereign Lord. God reassures His people that even amid war and threats of danger, you can rely on Me as your refuge. God speaks directly to the enemy in verse 10, “Be still,” take your hands off My people, release them and let them go! To His people, He says, “Be silent, be patient, and acknowledge My supremacy.”
This command might not seem reasonable to the human mind. Isaiah 55:9 tells us why, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” The human mind can never fathom God’s superior ways.
God is trying to get His people to do things His way! We don’t have to understand His ways to obey them. Have you ever wondered what God could accomplish in the earth if believers would exalt Him in “stillness or silence?” Perhaps, we would have the solution to our present predicament.
Revelation 8:1 speaks of silence in heaven for about half an hour, which will occur after the Lamb of God breaks the seventh seal. Everything and everyone will be in awe of what God is getting ready to do. The prayers of the saints will also be offered up at this time.
Could it be that since the seal of the pandemic virus has been broken that God wants us to be silent long enough for His people’s prayers to be offered up to Him? Can the whole earth come to a halt for thirty-minutes?
Here are some miraculous things that happen during times of silence; stillness and rest.
- God avenges our enemies when we are still. (Exodus 14:13; 2 Chronicles 20:17)
- We gain knowledge and understanding in stillness. (Ruth 3:18)
- A passageway from the old to the new is provided in stillness. (Joshua 3:8)
- We receive instructions from the Lord in stillness (Number 9:8, 13:30)
- We find favor with God in stillness. (Joshua 10-12-13)
- We get what’s most important in stillness (Luke 10:39-42)
Can you concur that our answers don’t come in the busyness of life, but stillness? Even when we lack an understanding of God’s ways, we should obey them. Let’s try it; we will undoubtedly experience miraculous results and find our way out of the pandemic.
No, it seems that we haven’t been still long enough, Gomer.
Pray…
Lord, give me a mind to follow You and Your ways even when they don’t make sense. Give me a heart of obedience. Help me to be still! In Jesus’ name, amen.
