“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 NKJV
At this time of the year, we can expend much thought and countless hours trying to purchase the perfect Christmas gift for our loved ones. We pick up and put down articles that merchants have strategically placed in our sight to allure us. We wonder, even sometimes out loud—“Will he like this, or will she appreciate that?” We want our gift-giving to please the receiver. After spending considerable time choosing what we thought would be a suitable gift, we sometimes fail in our attempts to please Aunt Susie or Uncle Bill.
The idea of giving gifts at Christmas began with the wise men bringing gifts to Jesus when they went on a search to find His birthplace. We are told in Matthew 2:11, “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshipped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”
Each of the gifts presented to Jesus by the wise men was meaningful to His life and ministry. They were gifts customarily given to a King. Jesus was born, King of the Jews, and He is the King of kings. These gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh were the perfect gifts for the newborn baby, Jesus.
As thoughtful as the wise men were, working in conjunction with Herod, they weren’t the first ones to present gifts at Christmastime. God, the Father, was the first to give a Gift to mankind when He gave us His only Son, Jesus, as our Redeemer. He is “The Perfect Gift.”
God didn’t have to wonder whether we needed this Gift since all of us were in desperate need of a Savior. He didn’t concern Himself about whether we would receive this precious Gift. He knew some of us would be excited about the Gift and receive Him with joy, while others would reject the Gift of His Son. Most of all, God knew His Gift would “fit” everyone if they chose to try on His Love, Peace, Joy, Goodness, and Mercy.
God didn’t waste time searching for “The Perfect Gift.” He generously gave the most valuable Gift to the world. Wise men still seek the only “Perfect Gift” not in a department store, boutique, or online; they open their hearts and receive Him.
Why not introduce someone to the “The Perfect Gift” this Christmas? It’s FREE to the giver and receiver.
“This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”…Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in Him and receive eternal life.” (1 Timothy 15-16 NLT)
