“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.” (Matthew 25:14-15 NKJV)
God has blessed me with many talents, gifts, and abilities. Those who knew me in the ’70s and ‘80s remember me as a seamstress and fashion designer. I enjoyed making clothing for myself, my daughter, and others. Many young ladies arrived at the prom strutting in one of my beautiful gowns. Or, they stood at the altar as a blushing bride adorned in my exquisite creations.
My most prized designs were an educational children’s wear-line exhibited in Paris, France, and sold in high-end boutiques and department stores under the label, “Kinder Garden of Fashions.” My gift for color and design is also evident in my craft products and home decor. Some of my other talents and gifts include preaching, teaching, writing, producing, dancing, and creating hand-made greeting cards.
While reading the parable of the talents in Matthew 25, I paused to meditate on this story for a while. I thought about the lazy servant who buried his Master’s talents, and I couldn’t identify with or understand him.
My concentration centered around the servant who was given the most, the five talents. I admired how he doubled his Master’s investment. But, the question that bugged me was, “Have I used my gifts and talents to their peak performance?” If I asked most of my family, friends, and associates, the majority would give a resounding, yes! But, there is a nagging thought in my head that says, no.
I believe I have done well, but I perceive there is more. I sense there are more talents and gifts lurking under the surface, waiting to be discovered. And I know the ones I am aware of can be sharpened.
One of my prayers is, “Lord, I want to use everything you deposited in me, reveal it so I can use it.” And yes, I dabble in a lot of things.
I am challenging you with the same question, “Are you using your gifts, talents, and skills to their peak performance?” If not, consider what the Master’s response will be when He returns.
Pray …
Lord, thank You for the gifts and talents You have invested in me. You did not give me more than I can handle. Please give me the wherewithal to be the kind of investor that glorifies You. Amen.
