“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)
Most people know me as a traveler, and many of my travels are via the friendly skies (airways). I was traveling from Key West very recently hoping to get back home in time to keep a desperately needed appointment. While sitting in the airport, the announcer alerted us that a storm was impending and that our plane would be late arriving due to inclement weather and runway construction.
My thoughts were, “Lord, not today.” We were also asked to make preparations to board quickly once the jet arrived so we could get out of Florida before the approaching storm. The announcer made it very clear that if it started lightening, he would delay the flight.
Our jet arrived, and the passengers deplaned. Great! We boarded the plane expeditiously and settled in for our flight to Baltimore, my destination. Of course, I am still praying because, I know the deal—if the storm starts before we take off, we could still be grounded. We headed down the tarmac, and the plane stops. The captain announced that we were waiting our turn for takeoff. The wait would be approximately 15 minutes because all flights were leaving from the same runway.
Our turn came, and the Boeing 737 lifted into the skyway, and off we headed for Baltimore. Not long after liftoff, the plane made a sharp right turn. I am thinking, “Thank God, on my way home.” We lifted higher into the sky and above the clouds.
After about 15 minutes of flying, the captain came back on to give us an update. He said, “I thought we were going to make up some time in the air, but we had to fly south to divert a storm, we are now finally headed to Baltimore.” WHAT! Did we spend 15 minutes flying in the opposite direction? Without a doubt, my appointment is in jeopardy.
As I sat on the plane musing over what happened, I reminded myself of how God operates. Usually, He starts us on a smooth and uneventful destiny journey—full of promises and hope. We are excited until things begin to shift, and our course changes.
We notice that we are moving in what seems to be the opposite direction of our visions and dreams. Questions and thoughts run through our minds. “Lord, what is going on?” “I thought You said?” “I don’t understand.”
Our misunderstanding leads us to become frustrated and sometimes fearful of the unknown.
Our God is an omniscient and all-seeing God. He knows what He is doing. He is doing His job watching over and protecting the visions and dreams He deposited in us. Storms are forming that we can’t sense or see, but God knows we are traveling right into their destructive path. To avoid a storm that we are ill-equipped to withstand, God blocks our path and diverts us in what seems to be the opposite direction of our destination.
Detours and divergences can seem to be a waste of time, but they are saving us from unnecessary suffering and possible destruction.
My favorite Bible character, Joseph, experienced many detours on his journey to destiny. Even though they were painful, bewildering, and devastating at times, it worked out for his good.
My friend, are your trusting God to guide you on your destiny journey? Then RELAX and enjoy the ride. You will have an uneventful landing at the appointed time.
Once I decided, I had no control over my flight; I settled down and enjoyed the trip to Baltimore and arrived at my appointment on time.
Pray…
Lord, help me not to be anxious for anything. I will trust You with all of my concerns. Thank You for being the wiser One. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
