Her children rise up and call her blessed…
Proverbs 31:28
This is the season that moms across this country and abroad are being celebrated as life-givers and nourishers. Motherhood is one of the toughest jobs that anyone can embark upon. A mother’s responsibilities are never complete. From seasoned moms such as myself to new moms like Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, we can never reverse the role of mom. Our children may grow into adulthood, but we still carry the weight of concern and care for our child or children. Much to do will be made over moms this Sunday and it’s well deserved. The absent and thoughtless mom may not seem deserving, but she gave a child a chance at life.
The Bible reserves a special place for moms, those who are moms indeed. King Lemuel’s utterance in Proverbs 31, known as the Virtuous Woman, will be recited from many pulpits, read from greeting cards, and lauded from the mouths of children on Mother’s Day. This woman is hailed for her multifarious activities, her relationships, and her foresightedness. This truly describes the heart of most mothers.
A mother is a person who keeps extending and expanding her heart even in the face of difficulties and disappointments. She never gives up desiring the best for her child even when she knows it would be best to let their hands go and allow them to stumble into success. Nothing delights the heart of a mom more than hearing of her child’s achievements and productivities in the community and the world-at-large.
It has been said that when children are young, they step on their mom’s toes, but when they are old, they step on her heart. I believe many mothers can attest to this. Motherhood doesn’t go without heartbreak. It’s nothing like having to watch your child go through challenges or pain. Can you imagine the pain that Mary, the mother of Jesus, had to endure as she watched her Son being tortured? Many mothers including my mom had to watch their children go through agonizing situations which eventually took their lives. This was heart-wrenching, to say the least.
I will never forget the day my 6-year old daughter underwent hernia surgery. As she was put to sleep by anesthesia, her eyes rolled back in her head and my heart dropped to my feet. I felt so helpless but hopeful. I had to put my trust in God that she would be better after the surgery than before. God is faithful.
It takes teamwork to be a great mom. It’s only by the grace and guidance that come from God that we survive and thrive through the assignment of motherhood. It is certainly a selfless responsibility. My mom is no longer with me physically, but she was a great mom, a Proverbs 31 Woman that poured her heart into her household.
Mothers, enjoy your day…you deserve it!
Happy Mother’s Day
