But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26
People say some things are just impossible. Who would have thought that Tiger Woods would have been jumping with jubilation on Sunday, April 14th, because he won his 5th Masters—another green jacket? After a life of win after win, scandal after scandal, injury after injury, most people thought Tiger was done…down for the count so to speak. According to the commentators, Tiger’s victory is considered the greatest comeback in sports.
It was delightful to see the spark in Tiger’s eyes again as he hugged his family with so much joy after another big win. The so-called impossible became possible right before our eyes.
As happy and excited as I am for Tiger, I am much more excited about The Great Comeback that occurred thousands of years ago. Most people who watched Jesus die on that old rugged cross on Calvary’s Hill didn’t think that He could make a comeback. Even though Jesus pulled 12 men close to His bosom and exposed His deity and humanity, they, the disciples, still didn’t get the fullness of Who He was. They enjoyed watching Him perform miracles, multiply resources, heal the sick, replace a severed ear, turn water to wine, and even raise dead bodies, yet, they still had some doubts about His omnipotence.
Jesus explained to them that He was going to die, but that would not be the end, because He would come back to life in three short days. This seemed impossible to all who heard this good news, including the disciples. After Jesus hung His head and died on what is known as Good Friday, most of the world including His trusted protégés, went back to their daily living. Yes, loud mouth, impulsive Peter went back to fishing. Hope for a COMEBACK had vanished in their minds.
However, Jesus is not a man that He should lie. He never promises what He doesn’t have the power to perform. Sure enough right at the scheduled time, after going into hell and wrestling with and taking the keys from our arch-enemy, the Devil, He makes the greatest COMEBACK, that will forever be recorded in history. That which seemed impossible with man was possible with God.
I thank God for Tiger Woods’ comeback, but it’s no match for the GREATEST COMEBACK of all eternity. If Jesus had not come back as promised, we would all be doomed for hell and destruction.
So, as we celebrate Tiger, let’s hold our banners even higher for Christ, our Lord and Savior!
Have a blessed Resurrection Sunday!
