Our worship school graduates love to minister the song “Well Done” by Tye Tribbett & G. A. Tye begins this song by saying, “ I want to hear “Well Done.” Then he asks if anyone else wants to hear those words. In my mind, these words are the most profound words any individual can hear especially at the end of their life.
I meditated on these words as Mr. George H. W. Bush’s body was being escorted up the steps of the Capitol by the Honor Guard. I like the silence that surrounds the commands as they move in cadence. It captures the attention of anyone in the environment and draws one into the moment. The words I kept hearing the commentators say about Mr. Bush were, “A Life Well Lived.” They were speaking of a full life. One committed to service and selfless acts.
These words that describes Mr. Bush’s life are the words that should depict any servant, especially a servant of God. As we embark on a new year this would be the perfect time to ask ourselves, will my life be considered one well lived? Has my life been one poured out, or have I imparted to others? But most importantly, is God’s agenda being fulfilled in my life?
Since all of us will face these questions one day, maybe we should consider them in advance.
A Life Well Lived, I pray this will be our epitaph!
