“Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.”  Psalm 40:5

There is an old hymn by Johnson Oatman, Jr. that was published in 1897 that goes like this:

• When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
• When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
• Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
• And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
• Count your blessings, name them one by one,
• Count your blessings, see what God has done!
• Count your blessings, name them one by one,
• Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
• [*And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.]

I don’t know about you, but my blessings are too numerous to count. It would take me many days to name them all. I thank God that He isn’t waiting for me to recall each one, but He sees my grateful heart and hears the few blessings that I do name. The older I get, the more I am thankful and appreciative for who God is and all that He does. There used to be a time when I took many things for granted, but praise be to God, I have grown not only in stature but also in wisdom.

Even though I will fall short, maybe I will try counting all of my blessings. I know I will be amazed at the things God has done. What about you?

This Thanksgiving let us remember those who paved the way and made it possible for us to enjoy the freedom of fellowshipping over a delicious meal with family and friends.
