Many of us are so busy doing for the Lord, we don’t take the proper time to rest in the Lord. Recently, we were admonished to “Be Still.” Meditation is a means of being still. I am not referring to a New Age practice, but a command found in both the Old and New Covenants. In the book of Genesis, Isaac meditated. “And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted his eyes and looked, and there, the camels were coming” (24:63).
From a biblical perspective, to meditate means to practice, to cultivate; keep thinking about and continuing to do. The image that comes to mind when I think of meditation is a cow’s method of digesting food. Cows will stand in one place for long periods of time chewing their cuds and regurgitating food. Why? Because it takes a while for their food to be broken down or processed adequately before it passes through all 4 sections of their stomachs.
Likewise, we have to ponder on a thought or word for a while before we can understand or comprehend it. This is why we are admonished by God to meditate or mull over His Word.
Let’s consider this food for thought:
- I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. (Psalm 119:15)
- Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. (Psalm 4:4)
- May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the Lord. (Psalm 104:34)
- Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. (1Timothy 4:15)
- This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Joshua 1:8)
- Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)
