A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.
Proverbs 16:9
Most of us know what we want or have an idea of how we want things to be. Therefore, we make plans and set goals accordingly, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, we shouldn’t hold so tightly to our plans or goals to the point that they cannot be tweaked or completely changed at a moment’s notice. Why? Because God is known for His glitches (unexpected change in plans).
In Luke 5, we have a familiar story about Peter and his fishing buddies, James and John. They made plans to fish one night just like they had on many other occasions. They were accustomed to setting sail on the Sea of Galilee and coming back with their usual quota of fish. However, on this particular night, things didn’t go as planned. According to the Scripture, they toiled all night, and to their surprise, they caught absolutely nothing.
I want you to notice a couple of things about this scenario. Peter and his buddies were in routine or autopilot mode. They were experienced fisherman, and their plan always worked. They had no idea that God was going to interrupt their plan because He was ready to take them to a higher level in Him. He wanted to change their thinking and give them a new perspective on being led by the Spirit and not by customs and that which always worked.
It’s human nature to lean on acquired knowledge and learned behavior patterns. Our thinking usually is, if it works, why change it. Regardless of your mindset, God is not a God of routine or rote. Many times He will allow us to use what we know for a season, but when He knows we can handle more, He will throw us out into deeper water. It’s sink or swim!
Even when God leads us to get an education, He doesn’t want us depending on it. He will arrange situations so that we will have to rely on Him.
Peter needed to catch fish for His livelihood. So even though, he was exasperated and halfhearted about trying Jesus’ method of fishing, He needed the fish.
God threw a glitch in Peter’s plan, and He will do it with our’s as well. We become too comfortable in our routine of success. We are not being stretched; therefore, there is little to no growth. No matter our age or experience, there comes a time for expansion.
I became the object of one of God’s glitches lately. I resisted it at first, but God began to show me, it’s time to grow beyond what you have already experienced, and subsequently, those attached to you must advance as well.
God’s glitches usually are uncomfortable, but worth it. He is only doing what you asked Him to do…“Lord, enlarge my territory.” So make your plans and set your goals, but beware, God will throw in a glitch at His discretion.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.”
Isaiah 55:8
