Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58
Last week one of America’s most dearly beloved pop singers was celebrated for her contribution to the arts, black culture and social justice. “The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin’s” voice and tunes had a way of lightening a heavy heart and bringing joy to the soul. Those of us who were born during the ‘50s and ‘60s had the privilege of being greeted with many of her early hits “fresh off” the press so to speak.
Those who participated at her celebration service range from Presidents of the United States, government officials, pastors, artists and other celebrities, family, and friends. Each one expressed their appreciation for Aretha’s life in their own way. Even though her service extended hours of network coverage, Aretha’s contribution to society could never be summarized in this short span of time. Aretha gave of herself and lived a full life that left an indelible mark on the globe.
Most of us will not be remembered or celebrated in the same manner as Aretha; however, all of us should be recognized for the contributions we made to the world. We may never perform at a presidential inauguration or sing at the White House, but God gave each of us something to contribute to mankind.
Many of us are using our gifts, skills, and talents to make a difference in our circle of influence, while others are making excuses for not doing their part to make the world a better place. Someone needs the talent you buried. After living on this earth and breathing God’s free air, it would be sad and sinful not to be celebrated because you neglected to share with the world that which God entrusted you with.
For those who are making a contribution, you may never receive the accolades of men, but God will reward you for your labor. “To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance…” Matthew 25:29a (NLT)
Well, for those who are wasting your talents— “But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.” Matthew 25:29b (NLT)
