What Kind of Soil are You Planting In?
A friend of mine put a post on Facebook describing the growth of her flowers and vegetables. As she explained how they grew and produced, I thought about the story Jesus told about the sower; how good seeds can be planted in different types of soil and yield different results. My friend said that her Hydrangeas were thriving. Their blooms were as large as a dinner plate and very gorgeous. She went on to say that her tomatoes had been very productive and her green beans had done very well. She further explained that her squash bloomed, but nary a squash appeared on the vine. And sad to say, the zucchini, well the seed must have rotten in the ground because there was no sign of them at all.
Doesn’t this sound like church people to you? Or, people in general. People are given good counsel and advice. On many occasions, they have asked for your guidance. Some will grab your counsel and flourish thereby, while others will make some noticeable progress. However, there is another group that will just waste your time and the sound advice that you have given. The words you gave will roll off like water on a duck’s back. You will never see a sign of any fruit.
Jesus put it this way, “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed. As he scattered it across his field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it. Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died. Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants, so they produced no grain. Still, other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” Then he said, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.” (Mark 4: 3-9 NLT)
I can’t say it better, so I will let Jesus’ words rest on you. I don’t care how fertile the soil is that you plant in, some will get it and some never will.
Don’t sweat it!
Thanks, my friend for the post.
