For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
As a child, Christmas was one of my favorite days. It ranked right beside my birthday. My birthday was, and still is, my favorite day because it’s my own special day. Christmas holds a special place in my heart, because of the joy that the season brings. As a child, I didn’t have the full understanding of the reason for the season. However, I did know, that we were celebrating the birth of the Christ Child and that He is the Savior of the world. Nevertheless, He wasn’t real in my heart during my early childhood days.
Over the years much has changed in our society concerning celebrating Christmas. During the fifties and sixties when I grew up, the focus was on the birth of Christ. No one frowned upon a nativity scene being displayed in a public place. Everyone greeted each other with “Merry Christmas!” Rarely did you hear anyone utter, “Happy Holidays.” Children could participate in dramas and plays in public schools as angels, shepherds, and members of the Holy family. There were no protests or lawsuits against celebrating Christ’s birth.
As a child, when Christmas grew near, I got excited just thinking about the Christmas stocking loaded with fruit, nuts and seasonal candy. This was so special! Unlike today, this was one of the few times during the year that children from low-income families, could enjoy these delicacies.
The aroma from the cakes, pies and cookies, my mother would bake on Christmas Eve, would send anyone into a childish frenzy. My father’s signature, was the meticulously prepared, 20-25 pound slow-roasted stuffed turkey. We savored it for a couple of days, enjoying the oyster flavor from the dressing that had made its way through every part of that big bird.
Yes, Christmas is special to me as it is to most Christians. Even though no one knows the exact date of our Savior’s birth, we do know that He was born. And not just because the Bible tells us so, the evidences is alive in every believer’s heart. My opinion is, if I can take my birthday seriously and hold it in high regard, why not do the same for JESUS’ birthday?
Regardless, of what the world is doing, let’s continue to keep Christ as the focus of Christmas and more importantly, in the center of our hearts.
I pray that each of you will have an extra special Christmas. Let’s Celebrate the King!
Pray…
Lord, I thank You for coming into the world to save me from my sins. I will always worship You and esteem You higher than anyone or anything. Happy Birthday Jesus!

Excellent
Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your memories. They prompted me to slow down for a moment and reflect on my own. Times truly have changed–and I think the best we can do is to extract as much ‘good’ as we can from these changes, and live as close to God as possible. I’m wishing you and yours the very best–for the season–and for the coming year. Peace and Love–Toni K
You are so right!
