Why are we sitting here until we die?
2 Kings 7:3
Decision making can be a difficult task for many people. Yet all of us are decision-makers. Even if we fail to agree or disagree with a matter; we have made a decision. We decided not to voice our opinion. In life, we can’t avoid decision-making. One of the reasons that some of us find it hard to make decisions is, we want to be assured of the outcome or consequences ahead of time. Unfortunately, most of the time we will not know the results of our choice until after we make the decision. That’s why making a decision can be a stressful task.
Decision making might not be comfortable for some of us, but it can have powerful effects.
The story of the 4 lepers in 2 Kings 7 is a good example of the power of one decision. These 4 guys were in a tough position. They were quarantined outside the city of Samaria because of their dreadful contagious disease. And to make matters worse, the city was besieged by the Syrian army and there was a famine in the land. The famine was so devastating that no one, not even the city dwellers had food, only the Syrian army.
The 4 lepers had one of three choices, they could continue sitting where they were outside the city gates and die for sure, go into the city and starve with the others, or surrender to the Syrian army where there was food. The only glimmer of hope that they had was to surrender to the Syrians. Would the Syrians have pity on them and feed them? Or would they kill them?
Well, it was decision time! The lepers made the decision to go to the Syrian camp. Was it the right decision? You better believe it was! When the lepers got to the camp, not one soul was in sight, but there was enough food to feed an army. The Lord had caused the Syrian army to hear the noise of chariots and horses. So, they were afraid and ran for their lives, leaving all of their food, animals and valuables behind. What a great day for the lepers and Samaria!
The lepers unselfishly informed the king of their bounty and the whole city was able to eat on a budget. The entire city was spared and thousands of lives were saved, because 4 leprous men made one decision…the decision to get up and take a risk! If they had not made this decision, not only would they have died, but all of Samaria would have died as well.
As powerful and impactful as their decision was, there was another decision made over two thousand years ago, that not only saved a city, but changed the course of the whole world. When Jesus decided to give up His life on Calvary’s cross, it was such a potent decision that the whole earth shook and grew dark, the veil in the temple split from top to bottom, graves of the dead saints opened, and the rocks split (Matthew 27:50-53)! A powerful decision indeed!
But the most powerful event was yet to occur, Jesus’ ascension from hell and the grave. This one decision conquered death, sin and the grave forever. Hallelujah—one decision gave us eternal life!
My friend, one decision is powerful enough to change the trajectory of our lives.
Pray…
Lord, please remove any fear that I might have for making decisions and give me the knowledge, understanding and discernment to make proper decisions.
