We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed…
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
Sometimes trouble seems to come at us from every side. We are hemmed in like the children of Israel when they were facing the Red Sea. They had mountains on each side, a sea in front of them, and an angry army behind them. What could Moses do to encourage a massive group of frightened people in a situation like this?
Jehoshaphat, king of Judah also faced what seemed like an insurmountable predicament when three strong armies were coming up against his nation. Jehoshaphat knew that he didn’t have the man-power or wherewithal to defeat them. Where would he turn?
David, while he was a king in waiting, found himself in a distressing situation when hundreds of his own men spoke of stoning him to death. These were the same men who were in debt, distressed and discontented, that David lead and supported. They turned their backs on David during a moment of grief because their children were kidnaped. How would David escape with his life?
Each one of these men were pressed on every side. They had only one option and that was to look up to God! Moses, simply told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today” (Exodus 14:13).
Jehoshaphat almost repeated the same words, “You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem! Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you” (2 Chronicles 20:17).
On the other hand, “David, strengthened himself in the LORD his God” (1 Samuel 30:6). David had to quickly remind himself of the many times that God had delivered him—from Goliath, a lion and a bear. David knew that he could trust the same God to deliver him from the stones of hundreds of angry men.
My friend, the situation that you are in that seems like it’s going to take you out, has only come to test and strengthen you. Like the men in Scripture, you have only one choice…look up to God. He has promised that He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deut 31:6). Look to the same God Who promised that no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and that you are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37).
You may be hard pressed on every side, but when you come through, you will be able to say like Job, “But He knows the way that I take; When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10).
Declare…
“Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15).
