Be strong and of good courage…Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.
Joshua 1:6-7 (NKJV)
There was a movie that hit the box office a few years ago, simply entitled, “COURAGEOUS[1].” It was about a group of male police officers, who easily took on the challenges of the streets, but had to come to the realization that they could not be godly husbands and fathers without courage. This conviction should resonate in the hearts of all who desire to live a godly life. It takes courage to live holy and righteous, especially in a spiritually dark world.
Courage is defined as having the ability to take on challenges in the face of fear or adversity.
Any assignment that God gives us will require courage because it will always be a task that surpasses human ability. A good example can be found in the book of Joshua. Joshua was given the assignment to lead thousands of people over the Jordan and into the Promised Land. God knew that this would be a daunting task for Joshua, so along with the assignment, God gave Joshua the prescription for becoming courageous and successful.
According to Joshua 1:8, God told Joshua to meditate on and observe the Word of God on a daily basis. In essence, God was challenging Joshua to be mentally tough and tenaciously strong in his mind. God knew that if Joshua had a strong mind it would reflect in his demeanor and attitude toward his assignment. That is, he would not cower when he faced difficulties and danger on the journey, instead, he would use godly wisdom and knowledge to guide him.
Likewise, God has charged each of us with an assignment that we cannot accomplish without courage. Yes, your divine assignment is bigger than you, and it should cause you to reach out for help beyond your human knowledge and capabilities. If you can achieve the assignment with your own skillfulness, it’s probably a self-imposed task. However, there is no need to be fearful or intimidated by the size or difficulty of the assignment, because, the same formula that God gave Joshua will work for us if we work it.
—Read and meditate on God’s Word daily.
—Apply God’s Word to our hearts and situations.
—Trust that God has our backs.
If we are steadfast in following these instructions, we will have the mental toughness, fortitude and confidence to complete any God given assignment valiantly. Fear will no longer be able to champion its way into our life’s mission and we will experience good success.
Pray…
Lord, help me to discipline myself to follow your formula for obtaining courage and having good success!
