“…Be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble…”
2 Peter 1:10 (NKJV)
I can answer the above question for all of us…YES! We have all received a call.
What is a call?
A call is a conviction to accomplish a specific divine assignment. It’s a firm belief or persuasion. With the call comes passion or a strong desire to complete the specified task.
Let me be clear about some things concerning the call. When we receive the call or when the call manifests itself, we might reject it. Many times we do, especially when it is something we don’t initially have a desire to do.
For example, when God called Moses to deliver His people from bondage in Egypt, Moses gave God so much back talk that God got angry with him. God asked Moses, “Who has made man’s mouth” (Exodus 4:11)? In essence, God was making Moses aware of the power that He had over his mouth. That is, if God made Moses’ mouth, He could fill His mouth with the right words for the occasion. Not only could God fill his mouth, but since God made his mouth, shouldn’t God be able to use Moses’ mouth whenever and wherever He desired?
Well enough about Moses and his stubbornness. I think I had more excuses than Moses when God called me to the preaching ministry. I don’t know exactly how long I ran from the call, but it was at least a couple of decades. Yes, at least 20 years. My excuses ranged from not wanting to be a part of the controversy surrounding the “Woman Question” to “I am not worthy.” RIGHT, who is worthy to do anything that God assigns to our hands?
I initially hated the thought of preaching. I couldn’t imagine someone calling me Reverend. The thought of it was repulsive. Neither could I visualize myself standing before people speaking God’s Word.
Whether, I liked it or not, God would not let me off the hook. When I finally yielded to the call (after brokenness), the desire to preach did a reversal. I became passionate about my call and threw my whole self into it.
Likewise, after Moses accepted the call and started on his journey with his congregation to the Promised Land, he became so passionate about his assignment that on many occasions he interceded to God on behalf of the people. Sometimes to the point of offering up his own life as punishment for them.
What am I saying? The passion and desire to do a thing might not manifest until after we accept the assignment. However, in most cases it will come, if it’s a divine call.
Now, YOU must answer this question—Have you been called to a task that you are wrestling with? Are you trying to decide if you are going to accept it? My advice, and I am sure Moses would agree…just accept it and get busy. God wins every time. None of your excuses will get you off the hook! And guess what? You might find that it was your desire all along, it just had to be activated.
Make this declaration…
Lord, I will do what you ask me to do. I will go where you send me, and I will say what you tell me to say. Because, I know You are with me!

Yes!
“And thine ears shall hear a wrod behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21).
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33).

You are welcome Sister Ellen! Love you too!
I found out some time ago that ONLY God satisfies! I believe whole heartedly that answering my life’s call from God leads me to a path of true happiness and fulfillment. I enjoyed this blog because it reminded me to continue to say “yes” to God. I HAVE been called….and again I choose to say “yes!” The ending prayer was truly the cry of my heart. Thanks Apostle Crawford!
You are welcome Pastor Franks!
This was good Dr. Crawford. I know that there i a calling but it seems vague to me. I know that God doesn’t always call us to the podium. And I wonder if there is a difference between having a passion for something and actually loving/enjoying doing something. I feel like Gideon sometines, you know with the fleece.
Thanks Wanda!
