Between Sunrise and Sunset
“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12 (NKJV)
I recently attended a homegoing celebration for a dear student. I was saddened to hear of her sudden passing at the tender age of 42. Funerals or the passing of a loved one always make me think of my own mortality. It is for certain that I will cross that great divide into the Land of Promise one day. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27 KJV).
The concern is not the separation from this life as we know it, especially if you have made your peace with God by accepting His Son Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. For you know that separation or death means you are going to a place of bliss and eternal peace, love and joy. The greater concern for you will be, “What did you do with the space, between sunrise and sunset?” This is also known as “the dash,” because on a printed funeral program, a “dash” is placed between our birth date and our death date.
This space of time is as varied as there are people. Some of us have a span of 100 years, while others have only 15, 25, 40, 55 or 70 years. The length of time is not as important as what did you do or accomplish during the time that you were afforded on this earth.
Some believe that no matter what length of time you spend on earth; it is inevitable that you will complete your assignment or reason for being on the earth. I am not so sure. Some of us do squander precious time and never finish the work that God assigns to our hands. It has been said that “there are many dreams and talents lying unfulfilled in the graveyard,” and I believe it.
So what are you doing between your sunrise and sunset? Are you about your Father’s business? Are you making each day and moment count? Are you sitting around dreaming of what you would like to be doing or are you living the dream? Take some time to ask yourself, “What do I want my space; my legacy to look like?”
Time is spiraling out of control. You can wait for one day that might never come for you. Or you can get busy now and fill that space between sunrise and sunset with life’s most important and meaningful activities. If you do, not only will you leave a memorable legacy, but you will hear your heavenly Father pronounce at your sunset, “Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant…Enter Into the Joy of the Lord!”
Pray…
Lord, I want the space between sunrise and sunset in my life to glorify You. Please give me the strength and wherewithal to use my time wisely so that I may fulfill my purpose for being on the earth. Thank You for reminding me to number my days and not to waste precious time.

Loved it.
Thanks Martha!
I’m grateful to God for inspiring you to write such a powerful message to me. I can preach this message. Bless you my sister. Keep on letting the Lord use you.
Thanks Minister Karen. To God be the glory!
Between sunrise and sunset made me ponder my own mortality and the impact that my life is having. Thank you for reminding me that every moment counts and that I can make a difference in the Kingdom of God every day. Life is indeed short…no time to waste! Thank you for this great “hump day inspiration!”
You are welcome Pastor Blessen!
Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful!
Thank You!
I woke up this morning thinking about my Mom. As I reflected on her life and the impact she had on me, tears filled my eyes. My Mom did so much with the little resources that were made available to her. She maximized her “space!” Your blog speaks volumes to the importance of how we manage the “space” we’re given between birth and death. It is not in how much we have or were given; rather, it’s what we do with it that truly matters.
Dr. Crawford, thank you for reminding me of the importance of time and “space.” I will use mine wisely. Love and appreciate you. Hewlette.
Pastor Hewlette, You are welcome. God is amazing, He knows exactly what we need and when we need it. I have also been thinking a lot about my mom and mothers in general during this season. Much love to you. I appreciate you as well.
